Derrick Broze is a holistic activist, investigative journalist, and author based in Houston, Texas. He is the founder of The Conscious Resistance Network, an alternative media platform focused on empowering individuals through education, spirituality, philosophy, health, and community organizing. Broze is the co-author of The Conscious Resistance trilogy and most recently author of The Holistic Self-Assessment.
Cultivation of the spiritual self in no way means that material and political concerns are to be left aside, but this often appears to be the case. How can we re-configure the relationship between the realm of “spirit” and the “shadow realms” of the material world? How might we re-introduce questions of politics, economics, social inequality, and mental health into spiritual discourse and “up-level” the spiritual community so that we engage with larger forces at play in the world? Is there a future for the festival community in the struggle for social justice? If so, how can we break beyond the echo-chamber of festival exclusivity to live and model a “BS-free spiritual” existence?.
Many of those who pursue their spirituality find themselves restricted by social superstructures that demand cash flow. In what ways can we move beyond this limitation to pursue our passions and inner calling while still attaining fiscal abundance? How can we cultivate adaptive systems that will better allow us to integrate into mainstream society, even as business owners, and transform our culture from within? What is the role of technology in this? How can we leverage it to build a cooperative and flourishing culture for all, while still generating personal revenue? How can millennials, in particular, find ways to bridge the spiritual and economic divide and create a future that is both transformational and offers financial security?
Derrick Broze has been working in the independent media since 2011. producing blogs, internet radio, traditional radio, podcasts, essays, and video content. His work has been featured on international news and helped expose surveillance in the city of Houston. Despite his successes, as a member of the "alternative or independent" media he consistently dealt with censorship as a result of tackling topics often ignored by the "mainstream" corporate media. More recently, indy media has faced heavy censorship via social media companies.
Derrick will share his perspective from within the independent media and let the audience know how they can play an active role in preserving the free press in the U.S.
