Michael Tam Wood

Michael Tam Wood began practicing the martial arts at the age of 10 and has since studied numerous styles ranging from Karate to Kung Fu, and from Ninjitsu to Tai Chi. Additionally, the practice of Yoga and experience as an art model have taught him to see the human body as a form of dynamic, living sculpture. Since beginning in instrumental fire~dance seven years ago, Michael has had the great fortune to work with world-class instructors and develop proficiency in the use of poi, single & double staff, single & double sword. Beyond skill with any particular tool, he has learned to see the art~form as an opportunity to maintain health, increase focus, and ultimately reach creative fulfillment. Recognizing the intimate connection between all things through studies in quantum physics, he came to understand that sharing the philosophy and practice of fire~dance is a powerful way to be of service to society. Through studies in psychology, Michael has gained ultimate respect for the learning process, and provides an environment both encouraging and exciting for students.

Fire~Sword: Dance of the Sacred Warrior
Duration: 75 min. | Location: Warriors' ArenaThis workshop is designed to introduce people to the practice of Fire~sword dancing as a path to creative fulfillment, inspiration, and enlightenment. The principals of meditation, martial arts, and art modeling are combined with a passion for dance and human expression to introduce students to their bodies as living works of art. As practitioners gain familiarity with basic handwork {techniques of object manipulation} & footwork {stances, steps, and leaps}, we practice moving our bodies and the swords to music. What results is yoga {union} between the consciousness of the practitioner and the sonic pulse, enabling the dancer to access an intuitive wellspring of creativity from which spontaneous choreography emerges effortlessly. Philosophical hints at the Tao {way} of life are sprinkled in for good measure. If you have them, please bring a yoga mat and anything that could be used like a sword {but which it's ok to hit yourself with while learning ;-}. If you do not have any, come anyway, as I do have a few to share...
