What does art mean to you?
So, the answer to this question is going to vary. That much is obvious. The writer will tell you. The painter will show you. The musician will move you. The dancer will sway you. Each and every artist will inspire a different outlook. Drastically different, yet conspicuously relatable.
For example, sunsets, are hardly confined by seven letters. The word alone doesn’t always capture the magnitude of dusk. Sometimes we need more than language because an experience simply cannot be reduced to a sentence. We need images. We need sounds. We need movement. We need it all!
This is the beauty and necessity of different art forms. It’s why we have collaboration, expression, and curiosity.
Maybe you’ve exhausted every possibility that has come to mind taking that perfect photo. Angles, lighting, depth, colors. Nothing is working. “Holy crap - what if I slap a quote on top? What if I have my friend hand draw the same picture I’m taking?” Of course it is, as usual, easier said than done. And it’s much more involved. However, as the common phrase goes: a picture is worth a thousand words.
Well, one thousand words is only one thousand words.
That said, it is limiting. As it should be! Limits are inevitable. You take yours, I’ll take mine, and let’s see what we come up with. The writing perspective could translate into the photographic and visa versa. An adaptation from the novel, for example.
In some regard, understanding your own art form helps you develop a universal understanding of other ones.
Instruments can dance and typewriters strike minor chords. Musical arrangements are like grammar, so-to-speak. And who cares if it’s written in stone because stones are sculpted into magnificent things. You may need to apply a few coats and revise the first draft, but if that doesn’t work, well we can just paint you a picture.
From the author, Dane Remo: Consider me a thinker and an over-thinker. An analyzer and an over-analyzer. A story teller, an open book, and a listener. Where there is fun to be had you may find me there because if you aren’t enjoying your time you might be wasting it. Cheers!
