  • James Kapicka

James Kapicka is a yoga ambassador, event producer and affection advocate with a passion for bringing people together to learn, connect and celebrate. Through sincere and heartfelt expression, he creates an environment that empowers students to stay in their integrity and trust their intuition. James offers sacred yoga ceremonies intended to facilitate personal growth and healing through the unconditionally giving of authentic self in a way that protects innocence and promotes creative play and expression. His classes, workshops and trainings center on profound re-evolutionary change both within and in how we exist in society and in our relationship with Mother Earth.

Contact Improv

In this workshop, we will dive into the principles of Contact Improvisation—weight share, counterbalance, collective mind, and deep listening—as a means for strengthening our relationships to ourselves, one another, and our environment. Weaving in layers of movement, writing, breath, positive connection, theatre, and PLAY, we will expand upon Contact Improv as a metaphor for life: exploring dance as a tool to engage creatively with our surroundings, transforming our in[ter]dependent narratives, and honing our instruments as human beings. Open to all abilities, ages, and experience levels.

  • Introduce basic principles of Contact Improvisation (weight share, counterbalance, communication) and movement vocabulary (push, brush, pivot, roll) as a means for reframing, healing, and building relationships
  • Cultivate awareness of nonverbal “voice” and confidence in using it
  • Cultivate empathy and vulnerability in relating to self and others
  • Strengthen individual/collective comfort around nonverbal communication, boundary-setting, consent, and bodily awareness
  • Break down barriers to creativity, trust, creation, and play.
Contact Improvisation is a revolution in trust. Like writing a love letter to all the parts of yourself—past fears, current masks, tingling dreams for the future—and seeing them for what they are: one.

  • Jenna Tico

Jenna Tico is a multi-generational Santa Barbarian, and spent most of her young life pretending to have a headache whenever a dance teacher introduced “Improv.” She is greatly amused that it is now the backbone of her creative and professional world. After graduating from Scripps College (where she hid from both Jessica Harris and Javier Baca as they taught Improv), Jenna danced her way from Bali to Berkeley: fascinated by the intersection between writing and movement in telling—and transforming—our stories. In addition to 20 years with Summer Solstice, Jenna has collaborated locally with Fishbon, UCSB Dance, Wilderness Youth Project, Proximity Theatre Co., Out of the Box Theatre Co., Nectar, Anima, and AHA!, where she currently works as a writer and youth facilitator. In 2014, she gave a PechaKucha 20×20 talk about flash mob dance as a vehicle for social change; and in 2016, co-founded TOTEM, an intergenerational arts collaborative that aims to build community through seasonal art workshops and storytelling nights. She is also a founding member of World Dance for Humanity, which means she will probably try to get you to do the “Thriller” dance at some point. Jenna’s work has been featured by Hostelling International, Passwords, The Manifest-Station, and her grandmother’s fridge, which she considers the highest honor. This is her 4th year with Lucidity.
