Carmen Crow aka MAMA CROW is truly a rare bird. A New York native and East Bay transplant, this self-taught guitarist and soulful songstress evokes listeners on a deep, soul level. Her sound is a mix of rhythmic, funky finger picking and string slapping, guttural blues belts and quick lyrical flow with insidious phrasing.
Her genre is Experimental-folk, Neo-soul, Roots, R&B; fusion and she sounds like a love-child of Feist, Lauryn Hill and Hiatus Kaiyote.
Her live set is soothing beautiful voice accompanied by acoustic guitar. Raw, eccentric story-telling and soul soothing. Her songs display introspective journeys through process of the human experience with a SOUL-ution based drive. She sings in English, Spanish and Quichean. From ancient folk heart songs to conscious modern-day raps; she also plays with a looping, vocal processor to take listeners through a soundscape that will inspire them and bring them closer to the soul’s essence.
MAMA CROW has played with Marya Stark and is the second half of the new witch-folk duo Scarlet Crow. She has sang with bands such as Nahko and Medicine for The People, Chris Berry Trio w/ Michael Kang of String Cheese Incident, LUMINARIES and more. She has opened for Michael Franti & Spearhead, SAMBADA, Souleye (Alanis Morissette), Jah Levi, LYNX & JANOVER, Goddess Alchemy Project, Sonia and DisappearFear, DUSU, Fox and Woman, Alma Desnuda, reggae legend Glen Washington and Grammy Nominee world musician Youssoupha Sidibe.
