CelloJoe

Joey Chang aka CelloJoe is an anomaly in the world of cellists.

By combining cello with beatboxing, he has created a unique genre: Classical Hip Hop.

CelloJoe records live on stage with a loop pedal and produces intricate tapestries of harmony, melody, and rhythm.His beatboxing (vocal percussion) and funky cello grooves form a rich soundscape for intelligent lyrics and his music spreads love, joy, laughter and conscious vibrations.

By beatboxing, throatsinging, singing, plucking and bowing the cello,CelloJoe can mimic many styles of music from dubstep to folk to rock to classical to hip hop.

CelloJoe is the world’s first long distance musical bike touring cellist.
He has ridden his bike over 10,000 miles in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Australia.

I feel called to participate at Lucidity because I have been to Lucidity every year since the beginning and the community and ethos of the festival align with my own.

    Join a fun crash course on how to learn the art of beatboxing or vocal percussion. We'll explore how to mimic a drumset with your mouth as well as explore how to create music together with our voices.

  • Bicycle Music Adventures Around the World

    Location: Dreamer’s Outpost

    CelloJoe has traveled over 10,000 miles by bicycle with his cello and played all over the world at festivals, bars, clubs, schools, plazas, on boats and on street corners on three continents. For all of these journeys, his group The Pleasant Revolution transported all their gear by bicycle and public transportation; without a support car, truck, or van.

    They utilized generators on their bicycles to make electricity for pedal powered sound systems which allowed them to perform anywhere from the beach to the forest to plazas in city centers without needing to plug into the electrical grid.
