William & The Earth Harp

The Earth Harp is the longest stringed instrument in the world, with strings that extend up to 1,000 feet in length, and was invented in 1999 by artist/musician, William Close.

The Earth Harp uses architecture and landscape as part of the instrument. The architecture becomes the instrument. Its first installation featured the resonating chamber mounted on one side of a valley with the strings stretched out nearly 1,000 ft to the other side. It turned the valley into a giant harp!

How does the Earth Harp work? The Earth Harp is played using violin resin on cotton gloves and musical bows. The performer’s hands are run along the strings to created beautiful cello like tones. The act of rubbing the strings creates a longitudinal compression wave. This vibration is similar to the vibration patterns that produce tones when you run your finger around the edge of a wine glass. It is also similar to the vibration patterns created while playing singing bowls.

Digital Rust

As a recent transplant to San Francisco, Dave Ward lives a life as a music producer, graphic designer and web developer. Longing for distraction while commuting to work every day, he started writing music while riding on trains beneath the city.

His first Midtempo release, Loophole, available on Addictech Records, takes listeners on a ride through dirty wobbles, thick, gritty basslines, talking synth bits, and chunky, driving beats. Having always leaned towards the heavier side of bass music in the underground scene, he constructs a twisted digital soundscape that pulls inspiration from some of the best parts of Glitch Hop, Dubstep and Breaks.

Dave has previously released music on Addictech, Simplify, Mal Label Music, KWs and Kanpai Records. He has played many shows in and around the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, as well as many of the West Coast’s most popular music festivals. Psymbionic

As a part of the upcoming generation of electronic music producers, Psymbionic creates aural experiences that demonstrate the possibility for multi-tempo Bass Music and culture to exist within a range of more divergent influences. With this latest project, John Burcham has been moving bodies and turning heads for several years, playing with acts such as Bassnectar, STS9, Beats Antique, ill.Gates, Excision, EOTO, and Tipper. In addition to festival appearances that include Nocturnal, Wakarusa, and Sonic Bloom, Psymbionic demonstrates heavy involvement both on the stage and behind the scenes at electronic showcases such as his local SXSW in Austin, TX. Burcham’s work informs his repertoire with roots in the furthest reaches of the electronic music scene, and grants him a unique perspective on each crowd through the latest developments of the industry. In a live show context, Psymbionic confronts mixes that are limited to the scope of the build and release, avoiding an industry epidemic of drop-monotony that overpowers the flow of music. Burcham seeks to prove that there are more powerful influences in moving a crowd than simple anticipation, providing an interwoven dynamic that relies on the strength of his blend, rather than the sole force or familiarity of the apex.

Psymbionic’s theory of music is a journey that doesn’t visit the same place twice, building excitement for what’s next not because you can anticipate it, but because you’ve never been there before.

Scott Huckabay

Scott Huckabay creates a contemporary, shamanistic musical style, inspiring trance states resonant with the heart chakra, creating sounds at 528 Hz, an ancient frequency that induces feelings of love and healing. His act is reminiscent of transcended master Michael Hedges meets Jimi Hendrix meets Ravi Shankar. He takes the audience by surprise, leading them through dancing and joyous celebration into the realm of his celestial worship – the courtyard of the Divine. Various guitar tools assist in the journey of this vision caster from the land of Mu and his six stringed instrument of divination.

Scott is rapidly gaining widespread recognition as the “Universal Guitarist for the Spiritual Renaissance.” He never played guitar before a motorcycle accident left him partially paralyzed. His life dramatically changed after making a pact with God the moment before he hit the highway crashing at high speed. He woke up from being unconscious with a guitar mysteriously laid by his feet.

His performance slowly brings the audience into his swirling, celebrating dance. And then he takes them to new heights - his love and adoration of the Great Spirit.

Audiafauna

Audiafauna is the result of a true collaboration of minds and hearts. What they’ve created is arrestingly genuine – combining the genres of indie-folk, pop, electronica, and soul to name a few – and can be likened to the powerhouse vocals of Florence & the Machine, the impassioned hunger of Cat Power, and the curiosity of Cocorosie. What they’ve created is uniquely their own however, and the striking sincerity with which it’s delivered transcends whatever personal preference listeners might cling to. Front-woman Kelly Koval is enrapturing, and her heartfelt words are matched by the powerful sound that springs forth from her lips.

The band provides a dynamic canvas for Kelly’s magic. Violin and cello deliver rich melodies and chunky chops, upright bass solidly fuses melody and groove, reverb-drenched keys and gritty guitar flush out the sound, while a motley mix of drums and electronics flow as a single instrument. The resulting sound is uncharted yet nostalgically familiar; speaking directly to our human experience, and arriving like a long-awaited breath of fresh air.

Wubakia definitively embodies many of the qualities coveted by our fellow counter-culture patrons of the so-called “jam band” genre: Thoughtful, dynamic, and sometimes complex compositions and arrangements, joyful stage presence, virtuosic musicianship, and a love of spontaneity, improvisation, and experimentation. Their repertoire bears smatterings of rock, funk, blues, electronic, jazz, prog, folk, and bluegrass. Lyrically, Wubakia songs range from esoterically profound to just completely silly.

Givers & Takers

Describing influences and genres is a road well traveled by the burgeoning musician; it allows the potential listener to bring his or her expectations to the live performance, a noble goal that should not be subdued. While we respect that approach, and invite you to explore our recorded music, we also respect the mystery of the live
performance: a place where subtle chaos rumbling below soaring harmonies can be shared, a place where the unexpected will reverberate within your eardrums, a place where endorphins and adrenaline will be
delivered into our collective bloodstreams, forging a connection that will define the fleeting moments we spend together.facebook.com/giversandtakers

Wala

This little purple haired producer is known for her high energy, glitched out, bass heavy sets. Anthropology geek and bass addict turned glitch hop producer, WALA’s eclectic musical style is a reflection of her past experiences around the world, infusing Indian percussion and heavy bass, with glitched out middle-eastern sounds thrown into the mix. Even the name WALA has dual in meanings in both Hebrew and Hindi-the two cultures that most profoundly influence WALA’s sound. WALA’s unique musical dialect is what makes her performances so universally enjoyable; she tailors everything to the energy of her crowds and keeps them dancing. She has shared the stage with artists like Freq Nasty, ill.Gates, Marty Party, NastyNasty, and Minnesota.

Howlin Woods

Howlin Woods is a 4-piece band based out of Santa Barbara, CA. that combines folky soulful vocals, melodic lead guitar, and a driving rhythym section, HW has been performing steadily throughout California since 2009. All members have been playing music together since 2002, jamming in various forms with friends and fellow musicians.

In early 2009, brothers Jordan and Griffin Chetakian introduced songs they had written to drummer, Matthew Farrington and bassist, Brian Chandler. They instantly knew that they had found a sound and vibration that felt just right. HW has crafted a sound all their own, collectively composing over 30 songs in just over a year and are continuously creating original sound through their love of music each time they enter their studio.

While the HW live experience consists mostly of originals compositions melded with improvisation, they are not ashamed to pay tribute to some of their greatest influences with cover songs ranging from Nick Drake to DJ Shadow, Grateful Dead to Talking Heads, Nina Simone to Pink Floyd, Otis Redding to Black Sabbath, etc. to

HW has had the pleasure to the share the stage with acclaimed acts such as The Devil Makes Three, Alberta Cross, Fitz & The Tantrums, and Dengue Fever.

Zodiac Death Valley

The best thing about the moody debut album from S.F. band Zodiac Death Valley is that it you can’t pin it down. Its standout track, “Cincy, OH,” is a piano crawl heavy on smoky atmosphere and bad feelings, like Tom Waits after a particularly rough night. Another highlight, “Hail Hail December,” sounds like what would have happened if the Doors had come after ’70s punk. Meanwhile, “Look Alive” could be a B-side off the last Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album. Considering the breadth and fire captured on the initial effort from these local boys, we’re interested to see where they’ll go.

The Pirate

25 Year old Andrew Gruver, aka The Pirate, has etched out a solid place for himself in the highly saturated DJ real estate along the Coastline of California and beyond in just 4 years behind the turntables. Currently, he hosts a future bass monthly called Space Bass - alongside Little John of Raindance infamy - in downtown Santa Cruz, and rocks clubs and festivals up and down the west coast. His sets are fueled by an instinctive ability beyond his years, as he combines all styles of bass music, while staying grounded in his heart and soul - reggae and hip hop. His selections and mixes keep even the most pervasive dub spotter enthralled and will keep any dance floor packed. Be sure to catch The Pirate in 2012.

VILLAGES

Lucidity villages

Deciding where to camp at Lucidity is one of the early ways we get to involve our participants; this continues to evolve for each individual, and the festival continually offers ways in which to collaborate, participate, and expand. The campground is focused into six main archetypes: the Renegade, the Warrior, the Mystic/Healer, the Family, the Lovers, and the Lunatic. Each of the archetypal zones are in every essence, a village: complete with a central zone where themed booths, vendors, and theme-appropriate workshops & performances occur, as well as camping, and connecting with the Archetype qualities in each region. The Old World Market will offer vendors a common space to appeal to the appreciative eyes of our guests, where local organic foods will be available from local farmers, and a few conscious food vendors will offer sustenance as well – creating a central hub to the campground as well as a small barrier between camping and the main stage.

Renegade Outpost

This village appeals to the Renegade, the Rebel, the Loner, as well as groups of these renegade spirits. This zone houses our Renegade stage – where we imagine our local mountain party crews and underground DJs tearing up the scene. Some large names that represent this style, theme, and sound may be scheduled here – but slots for our local talent will be reserved. Prepare for sick beats, after-hours parties, and a wild rebellious energy.

Warrior’s Way

The Warriors’ spirit here is felt. This area features and represents Strength and Courage and Honor. We believe this campground will appeal to renaissance fair groups, vikings, martial artists, Jedi, and flow artists. Imagine light sabers, tribal body painting, peace sticks, and kung fu. Playful battles abound.

Healing Sanctuary

It is important that we heal ourselves, each other, and our planet. Healing is facilitated when no expectations are made. Healing services will be offered for gratitude, trade, or gratuity – but money is not required. We hope to instill consciousness in our participants by leading by example, as well as providing healing to those that would otherwise be unable to purchase it. This sanctuary will feature bodywork, reiki healers, dream masters, ayurvedic medicine, crystal healing, sacred geometry, sound baths, herbalists, tarot, astrology, and other healing-mystic services, as well as related workshops and seminars. Shaman, healers, philosophers, visionaries, dreamers, and those needing the energy of this area will find a home in this campground.

This is Family camp! A fun, foundation and middle point of the festival… surrounded by healing and Love. This campground hosts our permaculture live projects, workshops, and seminars. There will be a kid zone with a host of fun and educational activities for children and families to participate in. There will be a daily famer’s market held in this city’s central hub. Family men to farmers, to people who just want to learn about eating and living healthy – this is your zone.

Lovers Nest

Romance, relationships, fun weekend-getaway… Love is in the air. This camp is fun, loving, humorous, sometimes wild and sexy. We ask those who tend to be on the raunchier side to lean toward the Lunatics village, whether you merely gravitate toward that direction in this camp, or if you’ll want to plant your tent there. Here you can discover workshops and seminars on topics of relationship, tantra, and Love. We invite sexy body painting, spontaneous displays of affection, impromptu performances, and sensual dance throughout this village.

Lunatic Fringe

This is a place of mischief, humor, silliness, and pushing limits. This zone embodies the Jester archetype. Look for things that run contrary to the rest of the festival, performances, and off-topic workshop and seminars. Art flows and evolves throughout this campground as the weekend progresses; tons of live art and collaboration in this village center. This zone brings out the laughs, and brings in a ton of creative input. Jesters, fools, artists, off-color characters, and multiple-personalities welcome!

Within the power of the circle, the facilitator will read excerpts from her novel and lead a journey to the sacred space Inside where dwells the Warrioress in her many guises. In the quiet time following, you are invited to create an invocation to your personal Warrioress Within in any way that calls to you: written word, art, song, movement. You will have an opportunity to share your Inner Warrioress with the Circle. Expression may come from one, or many at the same time depending on the size of the group. We will send our intention, have a spiral dance, thank the Warrioresses and Open the Circle. Please bring your trustworthiness, respect, love, compassion, responsibility for yourself and the circle, along with a journal, art supplies, instruments and/or other tools to express the Warrioress Within.Facilitated by Sarah Diana WildwoodSarah’s first Novel about the Warrioress Within, Walking the Tiger, will be published later this year. Partner Poi Workshop Warriors WayAs a beginner or an advanced poi spinner, this workshop will be exciting and fun. We will explore movement with our partner - with our props and our bodies. We will go through basic partner poi - such as doing stalls and weaves together, to more complex weaves and butterfly patterns learning to move our bodies and poi in all directions. (forwards and backwards, and turning to left and right). We will create chains of partner poi, where each hand is interacting with 2 different people to create a group synchronicity. We will start and end with a stretch. Come with poi. We will be switching between partners so it is not necessary to bring one.

Instrumental Dance: Meditation in MotionThis workshop is designed to introduce people to the practice of dancing with instruments as a path to creative fulfillment, inspiration, and enlightenment. Any instrument can be used, as the focus is on relating to the object using the universal range of movements of which any human body is capable. The principles of meditation, martial arts, and art modeling are combined with a passion for dance and human expression to introduce students to their bodies as living works of art. As practitioners gain familiarity with basic handwork {techniques of object manipulation} & footwork {stances, steps, and leaps}, we practice moving our bodies and the instruments to music. What results is yoga {union} between the consciousness of the practitioner and the sonic pulse, enabling the dancer to access an intuitive wellspring of creativity from which spontaneous choreography emerges effortlessly. Philosophical hints at the Tao {way} of life are sprinkled in for good measure. If you have them, please bring a yoga mat and an instrument {Poi, staff, sword, hoop, etc.} If not, come regardless, as I have some to share…Jedi Training: Aspiration of the Sacred Warrior Warriors Way This workshop is designed to offer 1} a thoughtful perspective on the practice of personal mastery 2} techniques of energy sensitivity, cultivation & manipulation 3} some basic principals of Light~sabre combat {for now known as sword~fighting ;-}. One definition of the Jedi viewpoint is suggested, along with a distinction between the attitudes of Jedi and Sith. There is a strong emphasis on understanding the nature of physical existence through comparisons in quantum physics and mysticism, and how conflict can be avoided or managed through one’s control over the frequency of one’s consciousness. Physical exercises are incorporated, so please bring a yoga mat and anything that could be used like a sword. If you do not have any, come anyway, as I do have a few to share…
